Welcoming Portuguese: a good deed chain!
We are a community. We welcome, share, and believe that language can transform, include, and help our society to be more just and open to diversity.
In the Welcoming Portuguese program, we teach free Portuguese classes to refugees and migrants in situations of social vulnerability to help them restart their lives in Brazil with dignity.
HISTORY
How it all started
University students of Brazilian Portuguese as a Second Language (PBSL), at the University of Brasilia, needed opportunities to complete their obligatory internship and gain experience in the area of teaching Portuguese to foreigners.
Families in situations of refuge and/or social vulnerability needed to learn Brazilian Portuguese to get a job and live in our society. So, in 2017, we connected the dots and created the Welcoming Portuguese program!
This way, we transform several lives at the same time!

Structure
We want to welcome our students in a personalized and professional way so that they can insert themselves in Brazilian society and become autonomous.
Classes in context
By using personalized materials developed by our team, we work on everyday topics, such as housing, work, health, rights, and duties.
Convenience
Our teachers come to the students at their homes and in their neighborhoods. This way, no one must worry about transportation! And we also offer online classes.
Qualified staff
Our teaching staff is mostly made up of language students and future teachers who learn by teaching, guided by a pedagogical coordinator.
Certification
At the end of each 30-hour cycle, students receive a certificate with the number of hours studied and the Portuguese language proficiency level reached.
Duration
We organize cycles of 30 hours total, with a minimum duration of 60 minutes per class. The cycles can be renewed as many times as the students need.
Schedule
The weekly schedule is flexible, so each student can organize his or her own. Classes can take place on weekdays and weekends.
